What is popcorn sutton?

Popcorn Sutton, born Marvin Sutton on October 5, 1946, was a legendary moonshiner from Maggie Valley, North Carolina. He gained fame for his homemade moonshine whiskey, which he distilled in the traditional Appalachian method. Sutton was known for his colorful personality, eccentric style, and his determination to keep the moonshining tradition alive.

Sutton wrote an autobiography titled "Me and My Likker" in 1999, which detailed his life as a moonshiner and provided instructions on how to make moonshine. He also appeared in various documentaries, including the Discovery Channel series "Moonshiners."

In 2008, Sutton was arrested and charged with several offenses related to moonshining, including illegal distillation of spirits. Facing a lengthy prison sentence, Sutton took his own life on March 16, 2009, rather than serve time in jail.

Despite his controversial reputation as a moonshiner, Popcorn Sutton remains a folk hero in the Appalachian region, celebrated for his dedication to preserving traditional moonshining practices.
